Joanne Weaver

Special guest

Joanne Weaver is a NYC-based, longtime recruiter and career coach in the UX Design field, helping tech startups and F500s hire their dream employees, and she's also a professional singer and songwriter in her "other life" (and is not averse to wearing pink wigs to do it!)

How does her work apply to you? The way she helps Designers is relevant to folks outside of Design, if you want to increase your chances to score an interview, land a job, negotiate comp, best position yourself in the market, and attain career and personal bliss. She does this by way of her independent, 17-year-old recruitment firm The Joanne Weaver Group, co-hosting a bi-weekly livestream Design:Unfiltered, hosting live events for the design leader community in NYC, her mentoring and education practice, and her career coaching work.

She founded The Joanne Weaver Group with co-founder Rebecca Levi 17 years ago, with the guiding principle that good user-centered design is a kindness to our fellow human beings — it makes life easier and more beautiful. Her guiding philosophy is to only work with the best of the best, have laser-like focus, provide a high degree of customization and attention to detail, and most importantly, infuse it all with a sense of shared purpose and humor.

Her path to The Joanne Weaver Group began in the early San Francisco '99 dotcom days at Scient, an ecommerce tech startup, where she fell in love with the industry, the people, and its entrepreneurial spirit. She later moved to New York City to follow her singing dream, and after years of recruiting top digital talent at a boutique staffing agency, she worked in-house at Razorfish as their national UX talent sourcer. There, she became an integral part of the UX community as a guide, leader, and a welcoming presence to all.

Joanne participates in several professional organizations, serving as speaker and mentor to IxDA, ITP, GA, ADPList.org, and ERA, and she has written as a guest blogger and been featured in video interview series focusing on UX recruitment. She has a degree in Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley, is a Chi Omega Sorority alumna and former chapter President, and avidly played competitive sports from an early age, including soccer, crew, and field hockey.

She is an unwavering supporter of people following all their dreams in life, and she walks the walk herself. Music is a long-standing passion in her life, and she currently sings live whenever she can. She’s crooned on the stages of The Flatiron Room, The McKittrick Hotel (home of “Sleep No More”), The Django, Pianos, Arlene’s Grocery, Pete’s Candy Store, The Bitter End, The Wooly, and Theatre 80. She’s released multiple albums and music videos through various projects, including a pop duo performance art project called BROANNE.

She's also “Auntie Jojo” to her two teenage nephews in Memphis, enjoys world travel, hosting musical hootenanies, and watching adorable animal videos on Instagram. She lives both in Brooklyn and in the Hudson River Valley with her longtime dude and their 2 rescue kitties Percy and Lily.
